New Literacy for New Times:
Preparing Students in your District for their Literacy and Learning Futures


A talk that explores the changes to reading, writing, and thinking as the Internet enters our lives and our classrooms.  We will explore instructional models that may be used to integrate the new literacies of the Internet into every content area and every classroom, K-12.
Best Practice Classrooms


Join us in a workshop as we explore exceptional K-12 classrooms in every subject area on the Internet.  We will look at exceptional classroom home pages and "borrow" good ideas to use in our own classrooms.  This session may be tailored to fit the needs of elementary, middle school, and high school teachers.

Exploration of Read, Write, Think

This session is intended to provide an overview of the ReadWriteThink website developed by IRA, NCTE and the Marco Polo Foundation.  Elements of this essential classroom resource will be highlighted as will lesson development procedures.  Finally, lesson components will be showcased through an in-depth exploration of several lessons from this site that helps teachers integrate technology into the classroom.  This session can be delivered as either a stand up presentation or as a hands-on experience in a computer lab setting.  This session may be tailored to fit the needs of elementary, middle school, and high school teachers. 
Searching for Information on the Internet

This session will highlight the essential skills and strategies that students require to locate information on the Internet.  A searching taxonomy will be introduced with an overview of the importance of each component.  Online resources will provide examples of how teachers can assist their students with the acquisition of these new literacy skills in the classroom.  This session can be delivered as either a stand up presentation or as a hands-on experience in a computer lab setting. This session may be tailored to fit the needs of elementary, middle school, and high school teachers.

The New Literacies of Online Communication

New technologies are integral to sharing information in a digital age.  Emails, instant messages, blogs and other web-based exchanges require new literacies for effective communication.  We will examine innovative online communication projects that extend literacy learning in K-12 classrooms.  Resources for designing and implementing your own projects will be shared. 
Responding to Literature with New Literacies

Motivate the readers and writers in your classroom by integrating online literature response projects.  This session will explore ways to extend reading, writing, and communication by interacting with online stories, joining traveling mascot programs and participating in telecollaborative response projects.  Helpful resources will be shared and explored interactively.
New Literacies and Reading Comprehension on the Internet: Strategies for Success

A conversation about the nature of information on the Internet and its implications for reading and critical thinking in the content area.  Learn how the Internet poses new comprehension challenges for readers of all ages and how skilled readers are helping us to better understand successful strategies for learning in this new environment.
Literacy, Technology and Content Area Learning: Supporting the Diverse Needs of Older Students

Explore online literacy supports, electronic anticipation guides, graphic organizers and electronic templates that foster opportunities for all learners to actively interact with text while fostering collaboration, critical thinking, and reading comprehension in the content area.
New Literacies and Classroom Strategies
for Implementation


How can I use technology in my classroom with one computer?  What do I do when I've planned my whole lesson and the technology fails? This session will address the real issues that classroom teachers face when implementing the new literacies while offering tried and tested ways of  working with them. 
Online Collaborative Learning for Midde School Students in Grades 5-8

This session will explore classroom projects designed to develop students' critical reading and writing skills usinga central theme, idea, genre or piece of literature.  Projects will address a variety of content areas and topics.
