Resisters and Rescuers...What can we learn from them?

What are some ways you have seen children or adults in your school, community or country singled out and treated unfairly? Remember to include an introduction, two examples of discrimination you have witnessed and what you did to help, and then summarize your ideas in a good conclusion.

Period 1 Essay Winner  - Rob Key

Did you know there are many races all around the world, but not all of them get along?  There are people that think they are better than everybody else.  You can find prejudiced people all over the world.  A lot of it is in the United States.  Some people watched their ancestors treat other people like slaves and as they grow up, they do the same thing.  Being prejudiced is not a good way to live life.

People sometimes call other people out by their race.  Once I heard a kid call another kid a white cracker.  The other kid got offended, but what if it happened to the other kid – he would then feel offended.  Kids can be friends with anybody no matter what their race is – White, Black, Puerto Rican, Asian, Blue, or Purple.  You should never just judge a book by its cover.  When the kids are at a younger age, their parents teach them to act cruel to other people just because of the color of their skin, and when the kids get older, they do the things they watched their parents do to other innocent people.

I remember last year for football, my team was in a very prejudiced town in Connecticut.  One kid tackled me while I was on the ground and then he called me a nigger because of the color of my skin.  The rest of the kids were calling my teammates niggers too.  We didn’t get mad - we just took it out on the other players by playing football.  My team did the smart thing by ignoring them and walking away from the incident.  I don’t know what would want them to say that.

Being prejudiced will not make the world better – they just think it’s cool.  Those people that are prejudiced are setting a bad example for the little kids.  If people would just get along, the world would be a better place.  If they keep it up, we are going to end up with another Civil War.  Just remember to treat people the way they want to be treated.
