About Julie Coiro

Julie currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses as an Assistant Professor of Reading in the School of Education at the University of Rhode Island. She has a number of publications in venues such as The Reading Teacher, Educational Leadership, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, Reading Research Quarterly, and the Handbook of Literacy and Technology. She is also co-author of the book Teaching with the Internet K-12: New Literacies for New Times and she coedited with four colleagues The Handbook of Research on New Literacies, published by Erlbaum (2008).
Julie began her teaching career in 1989 as a special education teacher after graduating from the School of Education at University of Connecticut. She has worked in both middle school and elementary school classrooms with typical students as well as students with learning disabilities and emotional difficulties. She received her Masters in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus in Reading from the University of New Orleans. After moving to northern California in 1994, Julie worked privately as a reading consultant and a computer teacher before becoming manager of Reading, Rhythm and ROM, a unique store providing computer software, quality children's literature, and technology support to families and teachers.
Upon returning to Connecticut in 1997, Julie worked as a technology specialist for three years at LEARN, a regional educational agency, while also pursuing a position as a self-employed educational consultant. Julie continues to travel around the country to provide professional development opportunities for educators in the areas of technology integration, curriculum development, and her current research with online reading and new literacies strategy instruction. She earned her doctorate in Educational Pscychology at the University of Connecticut in 2007, with a focus on Literacy and Technology. She was a member of the New Literacies Reserch Team from 2001-2008 at the University of Connecticut. Although, Julie is no longer a regular contributing editor in the Education Department for Suite101.com on the Internet, you can visit The Literacy Web, a website she designed and maintained from 2001-2006 as a member of the New Literacies Research Team.
