Interactive Discussion Boards

How does this traditional reading tool help develop strong readers and writers? Typically readers and writers are encouraged to share their responses to a book in small group discussions and book report activities.  Some traditional resources for responding to texts with discussion and creative activities can be found in such books as Story Stretchers: Activities to Expand Children's Favorite Books by Shirley Raines and Robert Canady.

How does technology enhance this traditional reading tool?  Through the use of online discussion boards and interactive websites, students can also interact with students around the world to bridge the distance gap and see how history and current events in books play out in real life Decisions, Decisions Online (see topics)  UNICEF Voices of Youth: (Children's Rights, Children and War, Children and Work, Children and Cities, and the Girl Child)  explore connections between books, themes, and authors by participating in email discussions  Book Raps  build searchable databases of books read and evaluations  Germantown Academy Super Readers Spaghetti BookClub create webpages that foster the exchange of ideas about the books they like to read with other students their age BookNuts Reading Club (post reviews, link to similar books, favorites lists, tips for starting your own reading club)  see spinoffs at The Book Club Zone for Family Literacy expand school-based annual Read-In activities with an interactive feature The Read-In, 2002 collaborate and publish their work inspired by literature to share with a multi-age global audience Susan Silverman's Telecollaborative Projects (e.g. Frosty Readers, Cinderella Around the World, Stellalluna's Friends, Kidspired Tales)
